Hey, North Carolina!
I hope you’re finding something to bring you joy this weekend (maybe doing the phone bank listed below!) We’re coming to you on Sunday because there was another update on the Justice Riggs case on Friday. If your moods are ricocheting, you are not alone. In North Carolina, the NC Supreme Court continues to disenfranchise voters. Here’s the summary of Friday’s ruling:
The Supreme Court ruled that the bulk of the impacted voters (those who Griffin claimed had incomplete registrations) do not need to cure and should have their votes counted. They then said that the military/overseas voters who have been challenged will need to cure, and have 30 calendar days to do so (starting when the Board of Elections notifies the voters--not today). The 273 voters who are overseas and have never been NC residents (but their parents were and that's why they are registered here) were disenfranchised by the court with no option for cure.
We're moving now to federal court. This significantly changes the strategy for cure and we will be unspooling a new plan over the weekend.
It’s a mix of good (the bulk of votes will be counted) and bad news (273 are being tossed) and 5500 still being questioned, but the fight continues on, now headed to federal court.
Here’s what you can do if you’re not one that likes to wait around!
ACTION: We are waiting to hear from Allison Riggs and the NC Democrats about the next steps in the case. In the meantime there is a phone bank TODAY and a rally on Monday:
Sunday afternoon phone bank with NC Dems to get attendees to go to the Monday rally: Sign up here!
Attend the Protect Our Votes rally in Raleigh on Monday 4/14 at 10am-11am: Register here!
And here are a few more ways to get involved if you can’t jump in today or tomorrow:
Sign up here with the NC Democratic Party to let them know you want to be involved.
Or sign up with a grassroots organization! There are two outstanding organizations that are coordinating with the Democratic Party: click here for Down Home NC, a grassroots organization serving rural NC, and here for Carolina Federation, a community organizing organization that works statewide.
Thanks for taking time on your Sunday to read this and keep the fight against injustice alive in NC!
